    Who is funded? (Eligible to apply)

    Companies in the commercial sector, innovation clusters, universities and non-university research institutions. 

    In justified exceptional cases, projects of regional authorities and other organisations with legal capacity may also be funded. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular are encouraged to apply. 

    Applicants must have the necessary professional qualifications to successfully complete the tasks described in the project and sufficient capacity to implement the project. In addition, they need to have business premises or a branch in Germany at the time the funding is disbursed. 

    Research institutions that receive basic funding from the federal government and/or the states can only be granted project funding under certain conditions for their additional project-related expenses or costs in addition to their institutional funding.

    What is funded? (Purpose)

    Funding is provided for measures in the areas of: 

    • Development, market preparation and procurement of hydrogen and fuel cell technology for use in transport – such as in cars, buses and rail and commercial vehicles and as on-board power supplies for ships and aircraft 
    • Measures for hydrogen production from renewable energies 
    • Integration of hydrogen into the fuel portfolio 

    Funding focus through thematic call-ups, including in the areas of sustainable mobility, public transport, vehicle fleets, hydrogen refuelling stations, trains and ships with fuel cell propulsion. 

    The funding is granted, in what amount? (The type and amount of support)

    Grant. 

    • Up to 50% of eligible expenditure for R&D projects in the context of industrial research 
    • Up to 25% of eligible expenditure for R&D projects in the context of experimental development 
    • Up to 50% of eligible expenditure for investments for establishing innovation clusters as well as investments and operating costs of the innovation clusters 
    • Up to 50% of eligible expenditure for obtaining, validating and defending patents 
    • Up to 100% of eligible expenditure for universities and non-university research institutions 
    • Up to 80% of eligible expenditure for regional authorities and other bodies with legal capacity 

    Two-stage funding procedure: 

    In the first stage of the procedure, project outlines must first be submitted using the electronic application system easy-Online.
