- Contractors carrying out measures for an eligible company with business premises or a branch in Germany.
The project must be implemented in Germany. The subsidised investments must be operated for at least 3 years after commissioning (usage obligation). The amortisation period of the planned efficiency measure in relation to the saved electricity costs must be more than four years without funding. The implementation period of the efficiency project, including the evidence, may not exceed 3 years. A completed energy conservation concept must be available. A separate contracting agreement must be concluded for projects completed under a contracting arrangement. Support for efficiency measures under existing contracts is excluded from funding.

What is funded? (Purpose)
Funding of investments in new highly efficient technologies and expansion of the share of renewable energies for the provision of process heat that would only pay off after at least four years (energy cost-related amortisation period) without funding, such as:
- Process and procedure changeovers to efficient technologies
- Energy optimisation of industrial and commercial plants and processes
- Measures to increase electricity or heat efficiency
- Conversion of waste heat to electricity or off-site waste heat utilisation
- Process heat supply from renewable energies
- Procurement and installation of sensors, measurement and control technology
What is important is: Energy conservation and a reduced CO2 footprint are achieved. The funding also includes the preparation of the energy conservation concept required for the application and implementation support for the funded investment measure completed by external energy experts.
The funding is granted, in what amount? (The type and amount of support)
Grant
- 50 % of the efficiency-related costs
- The maximum funding amount is € 5 million per investment project.
- Since 15 April 2019, it has been possible to submit applications for planned energy efficiency projects to the project sponsor VDI/VDE-IT on a rolling basis.
The competition generally works like a conventional development programme but is supplemented by a competitive component:
The funding decision is based on what is referred to as funding efficiency. This compares the requested funding amount with the expected reduction in CO₂ emissions (funding in euros per CO₂ reduction achieved per year). The higher the savings or the lower the funding requested, the better the funding efficiency and thus the higher the chance of being one of the projects funded in a competition round.
